‘The
Three Amigos’ - Garry Birtles,
Alan Birchenall &
Roger Davies were brought together
on a hugely popular East Midlands radio football phone-in, from
their beloved former clubs, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City &
Derby County respectively. |
It was always a lively and entertaining
show with ‘dressing room style’ banter and local rivalry
between them and the callers alike, but equally interesting discussion
of a variety of local and even national footballing issues of the
moment.
On the arrival of Alan Birchenall
on to the show , he was soon to decide that everyone needed ‘a
handle’ – (a nickname, in true Birchism terms!). Therefore,
Garry Birtles was subsequently named ‘Beaujolais’ and
Roger Davies was named ‘Stretch’ – explanations
available on request from Alan Birchenall if required! Alan chose
to retain his more conventional nickname of ‘The Birch’
and so they evolved.
From time to time, the show was
broadcast live from various venues around the East Midlands (or
as live as they could ever be, according to Birch!), which added
to the entertainment and brought together their listener audience
from the many different teams around the region and beyond.
Sadly the show was brought to an
end in July 2006, much to the dismay of its hugely loyal following
of East Midlands listeners and callers alike.
Since then, the public reaction
and response has been so immense that it has prompted us to now
become ‘Legends Reunited’.
